Why Do You Volunteer with CCA?
Hear from three long-term CCA volunteers

April was Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we’re celebrating with a special edition of our quarterly newsletter!  Get to know CCA through the voices, stories, and impact of the volunteers who make our work of providing help, housing and hope possible.

2025 Impact Snapshot.

At our dinner table one evening last week, my son suggested that we each choose one word we hope will define 2026. I took a few days to settle on mine. I wanted a word that reflected strength, the ability to stand firm, and flexibility—the ability to adapt amid uncertainty.

I landed on “Bamboo.” Bamboo is known for its strength, resilience, and longevity. It is sturdy enough to be used for homes and rafts, yet flexible enough to bend in fierce winds and monsoons without breaking.

A New Chapter of Welcome.
In my role as Executive Administrative Assistant, I was honored to welcome each person who walked through CCA’s front door—neighbors coming for the food pantry, donors dropping off supplies, volunteers arriving to serve, and families meeting with their coaches. Each encounter reminded me that everyone who comes to CCA brings their own story, and each one matters.

August 2025

Potlucks are a beautiful concept. I recently hosted one with a group of friends, unsure if my humble contribution—coffee and coffee cake—would be enough. But soon, others arrived: one friend brought cherries and fresh flowers, another brought vegan donuts and bagels, and yet another came with an egg casserole and another, homemade punch. Those who couldn’t bring a dish blessed us simply with their presence. Before we knew it, we had a feast.

Our dedicated staff have been working hard—while also taking moments to recharge. Volunteers have stepped in to help transform our spaces and make things better, cleaner, and more organized. Partners like Little Scientists and VOX Church are providing enriching, engaging programming for the kids we serve. The New Haven Public Schools meal van has been a steady source of nutritious summer meals.

The love that lives within the CCA community first touched Marisol Mora-Vega as a child, when she and her mother found help through the CCA’s food bank. She believes that God led her back to CCA as an adult so she could help others who are dealing with some of the life challenges that she has battled.

February 2024

In 2023, CCA served 30 families in our Hillside Family Shelter. 14 families (100% of families who exited) left to permanent housing.New HOPE Housing Program served 19 families.
